Signing of MOU between Universiti Brunei Darussalam and Duke University

Memorandum of Understanding and Cooperation Agreement were signed between the Institute of Policy Studies (IPS) of Universiti Brunei Darussalam (UBD) and the Sanford School of Public Policy (SPP) of Duke University on the 12th April 2013 in North Carolina, USA. This was Institute of Policy Studies’s (IPS) third signing in the follow up from the state visit of His Majesty the Sultan and Yang Di-Pertuan of Brunei Darussalam to the United States of America (USA) on 12-14 March 2013. Signing on behalf of IPS was Dr Joyce Teo Siew Yean, Director of IPS at UBD, and Professor Bruce Kuniholm, Dean of Sanford School of Public Policy at Duke University. Present to witness the signing was Dr Hjh Anita Binurul Zahrina POKLWDSS Hj Abdul Aziz, Assistant Vice Chancellor for Global Affairs of UBD. Also present at the ceremony were Professor Francis Letham, Associate Dean of Executive Education Program and Director of Duke Center of International Development, and Professor Corrine Krupp, Director of Graduate Studies, Duke Center of International Development.

Both the MOU and Cooperation Agreement outline collaboration in the new Master of Public Policy and Management (MPPM) program that will be offered by IPS later this year. The MPPM is an 18-months program which the students will spend 12 months in UBD and the final semester in one of the partner policy schools in the USA in which the Sanford School of Public Policy is one of them. The other partner schools of pubic policy are Georgetown Public Policy Institute at Georgetown University, The School of Public Policy at the University of Maryland, and the Goldman School of Public Policy at the University of California, Berkeley. Dr Hjh Anita Binurul Zahrina POKLWDSS Hj Abdul Aziz expressed that she was very pleased to witness this signing with Duke University, and elaborated that, “The MPPM will not only provide the experience of an American educational system in the partner policy schools but also provide a good networking platform for future leaders whom the majority are currently at their mid-career phase.”

Duke University’s Sanford School of Public Policy offers an interdisciplinary program geared toward training future leaders. Sanford SPP is ranked among the top ten specialties and overall graduate level public affairs program in the USA as ranked by US News & World Report in 2012. In addition, it also ranked in the top 10 in the USA in Environmental Policy & Management, Public Policy Analysis, Health Policy & Management and Social Policy.

In addition to having top-quality graduate programs, the Sanford School draws on, and benefits from, its close relationship with schools and programs throughout the university. The Duke rankings clearly reflect the strength of the multidisciplinary nature of the Sanford School, the Nicholas School of the Environment and Earth Sciences, Duke Medical Center and the medical school, the Global Health Institute, and the Center for Child and Family Policy. Sanford School was also ranked in the top four in the US in 2010 by Academic Analytics in the overall faculty productivity together with Harvard, Stanford and MIT. The Academic Analytics compares schools according to faculty output in the form of articles and books published, quantity and size of research grants and other details.
