Brunei Darussalam’s Transition to Green Buildings

Saturday, 3rd November 201 – Institute of Policy Studies (IPS), Universiti Brunei Darussalam (UBD) in collaboration with Brunei National Energy Research Institute (BNERI) and Economic Research Institute for ASEAN and East Asia (ERIA) carried out a workshop on ‘Brunei Darussalam’s Transition to Green Buildings’. The workshop was held at the Senate Room of Chancellor Hall, UBD.

Permanent Secretary (Energy) at the Ministry of Energy, Manpower and Industry Haji Azhar bin Haji Yahya officiated the workshop. Ambassador of Japan to Brunei Darussalam Motohiko Kato and Assistant Vice-Chancellor (Research) of UBD Dr Abby Tan Chee Hong were also present.

Participants comprised representatives from various government agencies and key stakeholders in the energy and building sector.

The aim of the workshop was to facilitate discussion on energy efficiency policies in the building sector.

A key highlight was the sharing of preliminary results from a study jointly conducted by BNERI and ERIA called ‘Building Energy Efficiency Road Map for Brunei Darussalam’. It was presented by Interim CEO of BNERI and Associate Professor at IPS Dr Romeo Pacudan and Leong Siew Meng from ASHRAE Malaysia.

Other speakers included Special Advisor to the President of ERIA (Energy Affairs) Shigeru Kimura; Dr Gao Chun Ping from the Building and Construction Authority, Singapore; Muhammad Zafri Rusli from Tenaga National Berhad Energy Services, Malaysia; and Wongkot Wongsapai from Chiang Mai University, Thailand; as well as senior officials from the Ministry of Development and Ministry of Energy, Manpower and Industry.
